This **1993 Crayola Rubbing Art Kit** had been sealed for 33 years, and opening it felt like cracking into a tiny 90s time capsule. 🖍️✨

Inside were 16 crayons, several blue rubbing plates, over 50 little characters and designs, and a storage box that immediately hit my 80s/90s cardboard pencil box nostalgia button.

The concept is wonderfully simple: place a rubbing plate under the paper, rub the side of a crayon across the top, and let the design appear.

Did I begin with noble historical documentation intentions?

Yes.

Did that quickly become creative chaos?

Also yes. 😅

But honestly, I kind of loved it. The crayons were surprisingly satisfying, the little designs were fun to discover, and the whole kit still had that hands-on Crayola magic more than three decades later.

I bought a **28-pound auction box of crayons** thinking it would be a fun little sort-through.

By the time it arrived, I had **37 packages** on my hands. 😅🖍️

At first glance, it looked like a big pile of random Crayola boxes, but once I started organizing everything, the box turned into a mini packaging timeline — roughly **1990 through 2016**.

There were classic 1990 64-count boxes, 2009 packaging tied to Crayola’s online “Lights, Camera, Color” era, 2010 Story Studio boxes, bilingual French/English packs, Dry Erase Crayons, washable markers, unopened 36-count boxes, crayon sharpeners, and my personal favorite group: the 2012 Meltdown series.

That’s what I love about collecting. Sometimes a “random lot” is not random at all. It’s packaging history, internet history, design history, and nostalgia all stacked in one slightly chaotic pile.

And yes, there were a couple of intruders. We respect the drama. 😂

Can 45-year-old markers be brought back to life? 🖍️

That was the question I wanted to answer with this 1981 Crayola Creative Lettering Kit.

When I opened the box, all six markers had completely dried out after more than four decades. Instead of giving up, I decided to experiment.

I split the markers into two groups. Three were dipped in water for 10 seconds and sat to rest. The other three had the caps filled with water and sat for a few hours.

The winner?

The 10-second dip by a mile.

Once the markers came back to life, I worked through the included lettering book and quickly realized something unexpected: creative lettering was actually easier than the artwork on the box made it seem...even if my first attempts weren't exactly frame-worthy. 😄

Apparently...yes! ✈️🖍️

Before a research trip to the National Archives in Washington, D.C., I packed a 40-count set of Crayola Signature Blend & Shade Alcohol Markers in my carry-on just to see what would happen. TSA didn't have any issues, so I grabbed a few fun airport shots before heading off on my trip.

Once I got home, it was finally time for the real test.

I really enjoyed these markers. The brush and chisel tips make them versatile, the colors layer beautifully, and working from lighter shades to darker ones produced the smoothest blends.

These beautiful Binney & Smith business cards advertised the company’s products—fine blacks, pure carbons, colors, chemicals, and extracts—and offer a fascinating glimpse into the company’s early identity beyond the familiar yellow Crayola box.

For decades, Crayola had a crayon called “Flesh.”

But whose flesh?

That’s the question at the center of this little crayon’s much bigger story. 🖍️

The color we now know as **Peach** was once labeled **Flesh**, briefly changed to **Pink Beige** in 1956, then reverted back to Flesh before finally becoming **Peach** in 1962.

And that name change matters.

Because crayons are childhood objects, but they also teach us language. They teach us what colors are called, what is considered “normal,” and sometimes, without meaning to, who gets centered.

Decades later, Crayola introduced **Multicultural Crayons** in 1992, followed by **Colors of the World** in 2020 — expanding the idea that skin tones are not one color, but many.

It’s a small crayon with a big history.

Crayola Air-Dry Clay, Part 2: the oversized crayon wall pocket is officially finished! 🖍️✨

This project definitely took more supplies than I expected. I had to buy extra clay, more Crayola green tempera paint, and a glaze to give the finished piece that shiny “crayon wax” look.

And the biggest twist? I could not get the paper-tear detail to work the way I imagined, so I improvised and made a hole in the crayon instead. It is not exactly what I pictured when I started…but honestly, I love it.

That’s the fun of testing creative products: sometimes the finished project is less about perfection and more about problem-solving your way into something charming.

Can I make my design a reality using Crayola Air-Dry Clay, Part 1: the part where I confidently start a project and then immediately realize I did not buy enough clay. 😅

For this test, I’m making a wall pocket using makeshift molds, clay tools, and Crayola Air-Dry Clay. The clay starts out pretty sticky, but once you knead it for a bit, it becomes surprisingly soft and pliable — which made it much easier to press into the molds and shape around the edges.

This first part is all about the setup: molding, smoothing, cutting the “vase” opening, and leaving everything to dry.

Now we wait and see if this turns into cute handmade decor…or a valuable lesson in project optimism. 🖍️✨

I recently tried the **Crayola Dinosaurs 5-in-1 Creativity Kit**, and it's packed with activities for dinosaur fans. From coloring and stickers to stencils and scenes to decorate, there's enough variety to keep little artists busy while letting their imaginations run wild.

My favorite part? It encourages kids to create their own prehistoric adventures instead of just coloring inside the lines.

The special edition **Cosmic Colors** box combined two completely different collections in one package: **16 bold Neon Colors** and **16 shimmering Gem Tones** inspired by precious and semi-precious stones.

While the Neon Colors captured the bright, energetic style of the early 1990s, I have to admit the Gem Tones are my favorite. Their subtle glitter catches the light beautifully, and even after more than 30 years, they still color like butter.

That's one of the things I love most about collecting vintage Crayola products. They aren't just old boxes of crayons—they're little snapshots of creativity, design, and imagination from another era.

I spotted these oversized Crayola pencil boxes in the school supply aisle for just **$1.25 each**. Available in classic red, yellow, and blue, they're much larger than a standard pencil box and perfect for organizing crayons, markers, colored pencils, craft supplies, or anything else that tends to pile up on an art table.

As a collector, I immediately started thinking about all the ways I could use them to organize my growing Crayola collection.

This 1986 Crayola Door Signs Kit was designed to help kids personalize their bedroom doors with colorful, handmade signs. Thanks to finding two identical kits, I was able to keep one sealed in my collection while opening the other to experience it just as a child would have nearly 40 years ago.

One of my favorite discoveries was a note on the back of the package recommending Crayola Fluorescent Crayons for "even brighter and more vibrant colors." Luckily, I had a vintage box from the same era ready to go!

I thought Crayola Colorwhirls Arena was going to be a simple art activity.

I was wrong. 😄

This turned out to be part art project, part building toy, and part friendly competition. Before you can launch the spinning tops, you color the design disks, assemble each top, load the marker, and learn how to use the ripcord correctly. My first few launches... well... let's just say they weren't exactly championship material.

But that's actually what I liked about it.

Once everything finally clicked, I started to appreciate what Crayola was trying to create. The tops leave colorful spiral designs while spinning around the arena, and the added challenge of battling against other players makes it feel different from a traditional art kit.

It's definitely a product that rewards patience and practice, and I can see it being especially fun for kids who enjoy building, experimenting, and a little friendly competition.

Recently, I picked up a bag of loose crayons and a well-loved Crayola box from a second-hand shop. The box is staying in my collection, but the crayons are headed somewhere new: The Second Chance Box.

Whenever I need crayons for craft projects, melting experiments, coloring, or creative adventures, I pull from the Second Chance Box rather than using crayons from my collection. It's my way of preserving the history while still giving old crayons a new purpose.

Around here, every crayon gets a second chance. ✨
